By- products from the meat animals

• There are a variety of by-products obtained from the meat animals. Some of these are edible and
  some are non edible.
• Edible by-products

• Inedible by-products from the meat animals and their uses –

• Almost all of the edible by-products are more perishable than the carcass. Therefore these items must
  be chilled quickly after slaughter and be processed or moved quickly into the retail trade.
• Variety meats can be merchandised as fresh or frozen items, or used in making other processed items.
• Cattle hides and skins are classified on the basis of hide weight, sex ,maturity, the presence and location
  of brands and the kips and skins. These three classes are based on weight on weight of the clean hide.
• Hides come from large and mature animals.
• Kips are the skins of small animals such as calves.
• The presence of brands burned hide affects its value.

the sick. For out of the meat industry come many important medications which can be derived from animal
sources. Such as life saving insulin for diabetic, liver extract for perinaceous anemia, thyroid extract, other
hormones and glandular products, enzymes aid digestion, bile salts and many others. Any curtailment of
livestock production would seriously endanger the supply of these important medications.
